CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Lilly was tempted to go home before going to the library. She was hot, tired, and her mind was buzzing. Much as she desperately wanted to sit on her porch and make notes while drinking iced tea, she knew that she had to push forward and go to the library. Delia would be waiting for her.

To say that the town library was the pride and joy of most residents would not be an overstatement. For this small town, the library was a statement of priorities.

The Goosebush Town Library was moved into an old elementary school twenty-five years ago. For a time, the library was only given half of the space in the old three-story building. But over time the library encompassed the entire building. A series of fierce librarians, led by Dot Robie, the head librarian, programmed the space well and kept up with the modern needs of the community. Computer stations were everywhere. There were study areas interspersed throughout the building. The library lent books, art, music, audio equipment, projectors, assistive listening devices, and other needed technology. A corner room on the top floor held town documents dating back hundreds of years. The documents were under lock and key, and only certain people had access to them. Delia Greenway was one of those people, and she volunteered once a week to help answer questions.

Delia spent many more hours in a windowless room in the basement of the building. That room had housed the Goosebush Historical Society for years. There was talk of the group getting a bequeathed home, but that legacy gift was tied up in miles of red tape. The society made do, hosting biweekly meetings of volunteers. There was a dedicated space on the first floor for historical displays curated by the group, which were rotated out every couple of months.

Delia had never been in charge of a display before, but since she’d been working on the Alden Park project, she was tapped. At first, she balked. As an academic, she didn’t like the idea of showing objects that hadn’t been closely studied yet. But then she began to understand, thanks to Lilly and Tamara, that by keeping folks informed of the Alden Park project, she was doing a service to both the town and the project. As Goosebush wrestled with its history, finding pieces of it unearthed, putting them in context, and letting folks understand the depth, breadth, and complexity of the discoveries was a service.

And so, the first Alden Park exhibition was going up, scheduled for a public lecture to the friends of the library on Tuesday morning before the grand opening on Friday.

Lilly texted Delia once she arrived at the library. She’d parked her Vespa out back and entered through the basement.

I’m here. Where are you?

Main floor. Come see the exhibition. Be honest!

Lilly looked at the stairs next to her but opted to take the elevator instead. It had been a long day.

She got off the elevator and turned the corner to the display area of the library.
